Weather protection of Särkänsilta bridge in Tampere: Smart planning – zero rework!

The waterproofing work on the bridge project proceeded on schedule under a high- quality heated weather protection structure. The Tampere project further reinforced the main contractor's already strong confidence in Telinekataja Group's expertise and service.

Särkänsilta will create a new route in the area, connecting the amusement park more closely than ever to Tampere city centre

A bridge is currently under construction in Tampere, Finland, as part of a broader renewal of the Särkänniemi area. Yet Särkänsilta is set to be far more than an ordinary light-traffic route from one shore to the other. What sets it apart from many others is its exceptional architecture: the bridge starts on one side of the bay as a single pathway that branches into two routes. The shorter branch measures 79 metres and the longer one 114 metres.

Plans hit the mark and quality requirements were met

Waterproofing the deck of Särkänsilta required a heated weather protection structure, which Telinekataja Group designed and delivered. The project lasted just over two months.

– Every phase of the work went right first time from our team's side. The plans had been drawn up carefully, taking into account the needs of our installers and the client. A temporary working bridge had been built next to the site and the entire area was closed to other traffic, which made our logistics and construction work run smoothly, says Marko Kunelius of Telinekataja Group.

The main contractor had positive previous experience of the weather protection supplier's service from earlier sites. There was confidence that even structures with more challenging dimensions would be handled expertly by the designers and installers, and that the overall solution would meet both quality and cost requirements.

Effective collaboration between partners

Marko Kunelius says that all parties found common ground right from the planning phase of the project.

– During a site review carried out as part of the planning process, we agreed which boards should be removed from the bridge's casting formwork so that we could anchor the weather protection to the sides of the bridge. By the time installation day came, everything was set up just as we had hoped, and the installers fitting the frames and covers were able to get to work quickly.

From the main contractor's perspective, the collaboration ran without a hitch. The weather protection supplier ensured that the client's wishes and needs were taken into account throughout the project. The site management team was always easy to reach when needed – for example in relation to opening the weather protection structure – and installers arrived on site whenever required.

The twin-branched weather protection structure was built correctly from the outset. At no point during installation were any deviations made from the plans, which is comparatively rare.

The weather protection at Särkänsilta featured a double-layer cover, which allowed the space to be heated in the manner required for the waterproofing work.

A weather-resistant solution that needed no corrections

Overall, the weather protection at Särkänsilta met the main contractor's needs well. The project was resourced appropriately, and the waterproofing of the bridge deck was completed on schedule. The main contractor gave particular recognition to the quality of the weather protection structure: it withstood demanding weather conditions without any issues, and corrections were never needed – something that is by no means always a given.
