The Turku Market Square site inspires unique scaffolding solutions

“Challenging, interesting, inspiring to develop new and requiring reaction speed.” This is how Skanska and Telinekataja describe the central construction site in the Turku Toriparkki parking lot, which is being watched relentlessly by both the provincial media and passing Turku residents.

The renovation of the Turku Market Square and the construction of Toriparkki started with archaeological excavations in 2018. Parking spaces of 600 cars will be built under the Market Square in the project contracted by Skanska, which will be completed at the end of 2020. The new, underground space connects the properties in the market area. The Market Square will also get a completely new look, as various services and experiences will be presented on an estrade of pavilion buildings and a stage.

For Telinekataja, the project started with the stair towers in the spring of 2019. Since the turn of October-November, Telinekataja has protected vault casting work with its solutions during the rainy winter months.

“We tailored a cost-effective package for Skanska that exactly meets their wishes. From the very beginning, we have wanted to develop our operations and offer new solutions that make completion of work easier,” says Work Manager Nico Kirjonen from Telinekataja.

Pasi Mäkinen, Skanska’s responsible foreman describes the Turku Toriparkki project as interesting and challenging. Telinekataja was selected as a partner thanks to the price and a cooperation that had proven itself on previous construction sites.

“We expect a quick response from the weather protection contractor, as well as innovative solutions. Telinekataja offers both of these features, Tom Laihi Work Manager at Skanska adds.

The good work of the professional partner has also been supported by favourable weather, in terms of construction. “The snow-free, warm winter provided good conditions for the site. There has been no detriments from frost during concrete work, and the ground has not been frozen,” Mäkinen says.

Unique bridge solution for long crossings

Looking from a bird’s eye view and even the live camera, the Turku Market Square looks like a big job. And that’s exactly right: the construction site consumes about 15,000 m3 of concrete, about a million kilos of brushed steel for concrete structures, forty kilometres of piles and 1.2 million kilos of steel beams. The number of floor squares at the site is 18,978 m2. The project employs a total of 30–50 construction professionals every day.

The weather protection solution is also visible and sizeable. In order to ensure the drying of the vault casting and to optimise working conditions, the Market Square site was fitted with, among other things, KH XL weather protection with a 40-metre span. KH XL offers weather protection even in areas where support towers can’t be used to increase the width of weather protection.

“I am particularly proud of the innovative ARS bridge solution, the like of which has never been used in the Turku region before. This is a bridge made of scaffolding material that allows long crossings without legs. We built a 23-metre-long bridge and weather shelters on top of it,” says Nico Kirjonen.

“Another solution that facilitates the operation of the work area is weather protection on rails. Thanks to the rails, the protection does not need to be dismantled and assembled periodically, but rather, moves on 95-metre-long support frames, and according to the site’s needs,” he adds.

Focus on customer centricity

Kirjonen says that it is in the common interest of the entire Telinekataja staff to serve clients, in a good and as customer-oriented manner as possible. It means constant renewal.

“We are happy to develop new solutions. It’s nice, even on a personal level, to be able to be help. We have a good planning department that works closely with the client and management. Of course, our other assets include good covers, good scaffolding stand materials and sufficient equipment stock,” says Nico Kirjonen from Telinekataja.
